Bone Spells

Here are some Osteomantic spell options, otherwise called bone magic. These spells have a focus on low range, high damage options that mainly deal Piercing damage.


Phalange Needles

Level 1 Necromancy (Warlock, Wizard)
Casting Time: Action
Range: 30 feet
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous

You cause the bones in your hand to grow and form into two fine, piercing needles, able to be fired from the ends of your fingers. For each needle, make a ranged spell attack against a target within range. On a hit, a target takes 2d4+1 Piercing damage.

For each needle you fire, you may take 1d4 necrotic damage. If you do, that needle’s damage damage increases to 2d8+1. You make this choice after seeing the attack roll, but before you know the result.

Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. You fire one more needle for every two spell slot levels above 1.


Calcify Corpus

Level 2 Transmutation (Druid, Warlock, Wizard)
Casting Time: Reaction, which you take when you take Bludgeoning, Piercing or Slashing damage
Range: Self
Components: V, S
Duration: Instantaneous

You rapidly cause your bones to develop and lattice over your skin like an exoskeleton. You reduce the damage taken by 2d10 + your spellcasting modifier. If you reduce the damage to 0 the bones remain, granting you Resistance to the next instance of Bludgeoning, Piercing and Slashing damage you take before the start of your next turn.

Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. The damage reduction increases by 1d10 for each spell slot level above 2.


Spear Rib

Level 3 Necromancy (Warlock, Wizard)
Casting Time: Action
Range: 30 feet
Components: V, S, M (a shard of bone)
Duration: Instantaneous

Choose up to 6 creatures within range. Each target must make a Dexterity saving throw or take 4d10 piercing damage as sharp bones erupt from the ground below them.

Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. The damage increases by 1d10 for each spell slot level above 3.


Wall of Hands

Level 4 Conjuration (Warlock, Wizard)
Casting Time: Action
Range: 30 feet
Components: V, S, M (a dehydrated hand)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

You create a wall of grasping hands on a solid surface within range. You can make the wall up to 60 feet long, 20 feet high, and 5 foot thick, or a ringed wall up to 20 feet in diameter, 20 feet high, and 1 foot thick. The wall is opaque and lasts for the duration. Creatures expend 4ft. of movement for every 1ft. moved through the wall’s space.

If a creature starts their turn within 5 foot of any part of the wall, the creature must make a Strength saving throw or become restrained until the start of it’s next turn and take 3d10 Bludgeoning damage as the hands reach out to grasp them. On a success they take half as much bludgeoning damage and are not restrained.

When you cast this spell you may choose any number of creatures to be unaffected by this spell.

Using a Higher-Level Spell Slot. The damage increases by 1d10 for each spell slot level above 4.


Osteosaturation

Level 7 Necromancy (Warlock, Wizard)
Casting Time: Action
Range: Touch
Components: V, S, M (a bone)
Duration: Concentration, up to 1 minute

You spur on malignant growth in a creatures body. Make a melee spell attack against a creature within reach. On a hit, the target takes 5d10 Necrotic damage and is Poisoned. Creatures without bones, such as elementals, cannot be Poisoned this way.

If you successfully poison the target, it must make a Constitution saving throw at the start of each of it’s turns for the duration, being affected as shown below.

  • First failed save: Bone growth hinders the creature. Each time they move more than 5 foot or take any Action, they take 1d10 Piercing damage.
  • Second failed save: Bone surrounds the creatures limbs. Their Speed is reduced to 0 and they take 1d10 Piercing damage at the end of each of their turns.
  • Third failed save: The creature is effectively encased, becoming Incapacitated for the duration.

If a creature dies while under the effects of this spell their corpse is ruined by warped bones and they can only be resurrected by the Wish or True Resurrection spells.
